What is The Ordinary Squalane Oil?
Squalane is a natural hydrocarbon that helps to minimize loss of hydration and improve suppleness. Unlike many plant oils, Squalane is non-greasy and non-comedogenic. Squalane is slightly heavier in spreadability than the Hemi-Squalane oil but still very lightweight. This can be applied to hair as well as the skin. This would suit anyone who would prefer something a bit heavier than the Hemi-Squalane, which almost feels as thin as water.
When do I use Squalane oil?
The Ordinary Squalane can be used in the morning and or in the evening.
How do I apply Squalane oil?
Apply a couple of drops into the palm of your hands and massage or pat into your skin. Start off with just a couple of drops and add more if you feel you need.
How do I layer Squalane oil?
You would apply Squalane Oil after your water-based products and before heavy creams. You can use it alongside other products, or you could use them alone if you wish. Maybe you´re tired, and you just want something soothing and hydrating. here are some examples of layering Squalane Oil
- cleanse > acid > squalane oil > moisturiser
- cleanse > multi-peptide serum + ha > eye serum > squalane oil > moisturiser
- cleanse > squalane oil
- cleanse > NIOD Flavanone Mud Masque > squalane oil
Are there any products I shouldn´t mix with The Ordinary Squalane Oil?
You can slot this into any regimen as it has no conflicts at all.
What is the PAO of Squalane?
The PAO of Squalane is 6 months. PAO stands for “Period After Opening”. You can find lots more The Ordinary PAO here.

FAQS about The Ordinary Squalane Oil
Some of these questions have been asked on Social Media and answered by The Ordinary.
1. I have relatively dry skin, therefore can I use both hyaluronic acid and the 100% plant-derived squalane in the same routine? Yes, this combination sounds great!
2. Can I use Squalane Oil every day? Yes, you can
3. What does The Ordinary Squalane Oil do? The 100% Plant-Derived Squalane is a product that helps keep your skin hydrated and maintains its natural moisture barrier. Squalane is a substance that naturally exists in the skin and does a great job of hydrating it. The formula we use in this product is derived entirely from plants, specifically from sugar cane. This means it’s a non-comedogenic solution which won’t clog your pores, and it helps improve hydration on the surface of your skin. Additionally, you can also use this 100% Plant-Derived Squalane formula on your hair. It serves multiple purposes: it provides protection from heat damage, adds shine to your hair, and reduces breakage.
4. I have The Ordinary Niacinamide, Plant-derived Squalane, and Ascorbyl Glucoside. How and when should I apply these? You may use your current products in the AM and PM. We would recommend applying Ascorbyl Glucoside first, followed by Niacinamide, Squalane, and then your moisturizing cream.
5. Can I use Squalane alongside the Rose Hip seed oil? It may not be necessary, but you may if you so desire.
More FAQs about Squalane
6. Can Squalane Oil be used with Niacinamide? Yes, it can.
7. Is it ok to use Squalane after acids? Yes, you may.
8. Would you recommend this product even for very oily acne-prone skin? Squalane and Hemi-Squalane are suitable for oily skin types. We have not tested this product on acne-prone skin. Please keep in mind that this product is not formulated to treat acne.
9. I have purchased this product, but I’m still a little unsure how to apply it correctly? Should my face be wet? We suggest applying either solution to dry skin. 2-3 drops should be plenty for the entire face. It is also best applied after serums and before creams.
10. Can Squalane be used in place of a moisturizer at night, and can I use it with retinol (before or after)? Yes, it may — it can be applied after your Retinol.
