I was fortunate to receive this tiny sample of the brand new The Ordinary GF15% Solution in September 2024, when I was invited to The Ordinary HQ in Toronto. A little history of Growth Factors
- Rita Levi-Montalcini was a brilliant scientist from Italy. In 1952, she discovered something super important: the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). This special “helper” in our body helps nerves (the tiny things that send messages to our brain) grow and stay healthy.
- Because of this significant discovery, Rita won a Nobel Prize in 1986. She shared the prize with another scientist, Stanley Cohen. He discovered another important helper for skin called Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF).
- She faced a lot of challenges, like being one of the few women scientists at the time. Rita kept working hard and made a discovery that helped people understand how our bodies grow and heal.
- Stanley Cohen found a growth factor called Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), which helps the skin grow and heal. He also received a Nobel Prize for his discovery because it was so important.
- After that, other scientists found more growth factors that help different parts of our skin and body, like fibroblast growth factor (which helps skin feel strong) and platelet-derived growth factor (which helps heal wounds).
- In the 1990s and 2000s, skincare companies started adding them to lotions and creams.
