The Ordinary & NIOD Cleansers – Which one should you choose?
The Ordinary Cleansers & NIOD Cleansers – Cleansers are one of the most extensive discussions in The Ordinary & Deciem Chat Room Facebook Group. Everyone absolutely loves talking about cleansers. The Ordinary had just 1 cleanser for a long time, and then last year (2023), we saw the launch of 2 more; Glucoside Foaming Cleanser and Glycolipid Cream Cleanser. So now, between The Ordinary & NIOD, you can choose 5 cleansers.

With 5 different cleansers to choose from, you may choose based on ingredients and reviews, or you may even select depending on price. Below, I have listed the price per 100ml because we often think something is costly but when you break it down per 100ml, you may be surprised. The best value cleansers from The Ordinary are the Glucoside and Glycolipid cream cleansers at just 8.33$ per 100ml. NIOD SS is actually the most expensive when I thought it was NIOD LVCE.

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser
Quick 15-Second Guide To Squalane Cleanser
- The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser is available in 3 sizes: 50ml, 150ml & 240ml
- A lovely, gentle cleanser, great for removing makeup.
- It can be used as a first or second cleanse.
- This must be rubbed between the palms of your hands for quite a few seconds until you feel the consistency change from a balm to an oily texture.
- I find this a great cleanser to travel with.

My thoughts on the Squalane Cleanser
“This was The Ordinary’s very first cleanser, and it was the first time I had tried a cleanser like this. The Squalane Cleanser needs to be rubbed between the palms of your hands for quite a few seconds (maybe up to around 20) until the consistency changes to a shiny, slippery consistency, and your palms just glide. You then massage this onto your face, and it melts your makeup and SPF away. I love the way the consistency changes, but my problem is patience; my hands are always cold, so this takes quite a while for me. Some people have said they apply directly and massage directly onto their face for the consistency to change. The Squalane Cleanser cleans really well and is a great cleanser to travel with. “
The Ordinary Glucoside Foaming Cleanser
Quick 15-Second Guide To Glucoside Cleanser
- Currently available in 150ml or 50ml in The Discovery Set
- A lovely cleanser that removes makeup really well and quickly.
- This is a foaming cleanser but with low foam.
- This was originally created for babies, so that´s how gentle it is.
- If you like a quick, no-fuss cleanser – this is for you.

My Thoughts on the Glucoside Foaming Cleanser
“When this cleanser came out, it was love at first use. Being someone who is rather impatient, this cleanser is absolutely perfect for me! It works practically instantly for me, removing all makeup and SPF quickly and effectively with no eye irritation whatsoever. I find this leaves my skin so clean and fresh-looking. I just love it! It´s called a foaming cleanser, but it has very low foaming. This cleanser was originally formulated for babies, so that´s how gentle it is. I absolutely love this! The only negative is that I cannot travel with it, although I have put it into another bottle at times.“
The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser
My Thoughts on the Glycolipid Cleanser
“So this came out around the same time as the Glucoside Foaming Cleanser and because I loved the Glucoside Foaming Cleanser so much, this one took a back seat. But, I now use this as well as my Glucoside Cleanser. They both work very well at removing makeup and it just depends on my mood or which one is easier to grab. This is creamy and soft whereas the Glucoside feels bright and fresh. I would highly recommend giving both a go and seeing which one you prefer.”
Quick 15-Second Guide to Glycolipid Cream Cleanser
- The Glycolipid Cream Cleanser cleanses the skin and removes all makeup really well.
- This formulation uses a plant-derived glycolipid cleansing agent that cleanses the skin while respecting the skin barrier to maintain hydration. Additionally, this cleanser is formulated to be non-stripping to respect the skin’s natural pH.
- Cream Cleanser can be used on dry or damp skin.
- Size 150ml. 50ml in The Cleanser Discovery Set

NIOD Cleansers
NIOD LVCE Low-Viscosity Cleaning Ester
My Thoughts on NIOD LVCE Cleanser
“NIOD LVCE – This has been one of my favourites for a long time now. My love for it started when I found it removed a very stubborn mascara that no other cleanser could remove and left my skin feeling clean, soft and hydrated. This is a oily solution and be used with or without water, with your hands or on a cotton pad. You can find which way suits you. I use it all ways depending on where I am. This leaves skin feeling super hydrated and you may feel a slight film on your skin which is intentional. The only negative for me is the price, BUT, it is 240ml and will last ages!”
Quick 15-Second Guide to NIOD LVCE
- NIOD LVCE comes in 240ml
- It is pretty pricey, but it is 240ml, and it will last you quite a while
- Make sure you check the cost per 100ml with other cleansers!
- NIOD LVCE removes makeup really easily.
- It can be used with or without water, with hands or a cotton pad. I like to use my hands and finish with a cloth.
- Some feel it can be messy and don´t like using a cloth.
- It leaves skin feeling really nice and hydrated.

NIOD SS Sanskrit Saponins
My thoughts on NIOD SS
“This is a cleanser I have grown to love especially when used as a masque. On a recent holiday, after a day on the beach and just before going out for dinner, I loved relaxing for a few minutes, using this as a masque, especially after all the SPF and sand. The smell is quite strong, which is one of the main negative comments about this, but I quite like it. The colour, texture and smell is unlike any other cleanser I have used. If you are going to try this, buy the smaller size first.”
Quick 15-Second Guide To NIOD SS
- Sanskrit Saponins comes in 2 sizes, 90ml & 180ml, in tube as pictured above.
- NIOD SS can be used as a cleanser and also as a 5-minute mask
- This would be best as a second cleanse because it is not a make-up remover.
- You should avoid the eyes with this cleanser.
- This is a light beige colour and has quite a yeasty smell.
- Cleanses well and leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean.

The Ordinary Cleansers & NIOD Cleansers
How would you decide between The Ordinary Glycolipid Cleanser, Squalane Cleanser and Glucoside Foaming Cleanser?
The Ordinary says that this would depend on your preference. Glycolipid Cream Cleanser offers a cream texture compared to Glucoside Foaming Cleanser, which provides a light, foaming cleanse, and Squalane Cleanser, which offers a balm-like texture. If you want to remove makeup, you may prefer to explore Glycolipid Cream Cleanser or Squalane Cleanser.
