What is The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane & what does it do?
The Ordinary says: Highly-Stable, Water-Free Solution of 1% Pure Retinol and is a water-free solution that contains 1% pure Retinol. This ingredient can reduce photodamage, the appearance of fine lines, and of general skin ageing.
While Retinol has been studied extensively, it is irritating to the skin, and newer technologies exist that mimic the visible effects of Retinol without causing skin irritation. For this reason, we generally recommend using Granactive Retinoid 2% or Granactive Retinoid 5% instead of this formula.
Which Retinol is best to start with if I´m a beginner?
If you’re new to Retinol, start with Retinol in Squalane 0.2% or Retinol in Squalane 0.5%. See the guide to retinol & retinoids here.

When and how to use Retinol 1% in Squalane
- Retinol 1% in Squalane is best used in the evening
- Start with cleansed, dry skin
- Apply 2 or 3 drops to the face after water-based serums (if using) and before heavier treatments.
- Retinol can cause irritation, redness and peeling, particularly around the eyes and mouth, in the early stages of treatment while skin builds tolerance. This is why it is important to start with 0.2% or 0.5% Retinol first.

Example Routines Incorporating Retinol – Where does Retinol go in my routine?
Retinol in Squalane is a Anhydrous solution and should be applied after water-based products (if using and before heavy moisturizers (if using). I say if using because you do not have to use all these solutions. This is just a guide on how to layer the products in their solutions so they absorb well. If you are someone who is short on time or just wants a very minimalistic routine, here are some ideas of how to layer Retinol in Squlane. If you feel Retinol in Squalane is hydrating enough and using a moisturizer on top feels too much, don´t use a moisturizer.
- Cleanse + Retinol
- Start with Cleanse + Retinol in Squalane + Natural Moisturizing Factors
- Cleanse + Hyaluronic Acid + Retinol in Squalane + Natural Moisturizing Factors + Phyto Ceramides
- Cleanser + Niacinamide + Retinol in Squalane + Natural Moisturizing Factors + Beta Glucan
